When telling your story...
A picture is worth a thousand words.

Pictures are everywhere; we see pictures of people in ads, magazines, and business websites, but not very often on library websites.

Including photos from library events and of the library staff helps give the library a more human feel.

Flickr is an online photo-sharing site that can help you store your library images and publish them to your site. This workshop will walk you through signing up for Flickr, uploading images, managing images with sets and collections, tagging images, mapping your photos and much more.

By the end of this session you’ll be ready to sign up for a Flickr account for you library and start sharing pictures.

About our presenter:

Nicole Engard is a a librarian, open source evangelist, blogger, writer, teacher, dog lover and overall technology enthusiast.  She is well known for her popular blog, What I Learned Today where she writes about technology issues for libraries and her work with Koha and open source issues in libraries. In 2007 she was named one of Library Journal's Movers & Shakers and has published several articles on technology and libraries.

Presenters will address policy issues, as well as the nuts and bolts information about why and how to implement such service.

Design is all about solving problems and even if you don't know it... you're a designer. In this presentation Aaron Schmidt will demonstrate that you have a role as an information service designer.  Every element of library service can be improved by examining and designing with an eye towards our customers experience. Whether you focus on the physical building, signage, services, or the library's website, you can learn to apply a keener critical eye and evaluate through a design framework, leading to a higher quality customer experience. In addition to covering user design principles, Schmidt will also discuss how design principles can be applied to website best practices, and how design research can guide our creation of a truly user-centered library.  The presentation will contain some breakout sessions for practical discussions. About our Presenter Aaron he is the Digital Initiatives Librarian for the District of Columbia Public Library (but still lives in Portland!.)  He is a writer, presenter, and consultant on User Experience, and is the author of a new Library Journal column on User Experience.   In the past eight years Aaron Schmidt has been a circulation clerk, reference librarian, and library director.  Shortly after completing his MLIS at Dominican University, Schmidt saw the potential of applying new media technology to libraries and launched successful programs at his suburban Chicago public library.  Helping the library connect to its community through things such as instant messaging, blogs and social software led to Aaron publishing articles in Library Journal, School Library Journal, Library High Tech News, Online, and others.  In 2005, Schmidt was named a Library Journal “Mover & Shaker.”   He maintains a library and website usability weblog, http://walkingpaper.org --- Earn  5 Professional Development Hours for attending this program. --- CLICK TO REGISTER

Using WebJunction "Demonstrating Impact" documents and in partnership with the NJ State Library, the Highlands Regional Library Cooperative created a “Valuing Libraries Toolkit”; A simple method to quickly calculate a library's return on investment and demonstrate its value.  Learn how to use the toolkit to demonstrate the value of your school library!

About the Presenter:

Joanne P. Roukens is the Executive Director for the Highlands Regional Library Cooperative (HRLC) in Denville, NJ. HRLC provides resources, services, expertise and continuing education programs to 975 member libraries in a seven-county region in northern New Jersey. She has a Certificate in Training from the New Jersey Department of Personnel and co-coordinated the New Jersey Train-the-Trainers Program from 2001 - 2005. Joanne was the New Jersey Library Association’s 2007 Librarian of the Year.
