We invite SJRLC librarians who serve teens from both school (middle and high) and public libraries as well as administrators who fund these services to join us for a great booktalking program, networking lunch, and planning session on services to teens in the Region.  (Librarians from other Regions can register on a space-available basis)

We are pleased to announce that
Jennifer Hubert will be our guest presenter!

Booktalking the "Reading Rants" way!

Booktalking is a tremendous tool for promoting your collection and attracting readers. Join our speaker Jennifer Hubert, author of the website Reading Rants! Out of the Ordinary Booklists for Teens and book of the same title, in a fun, useful, interactive presentation.  You will learn tips and techniques that will help newbie and seasoned booktalkers alike craft successful booktalks that connect young adults with books they will love!

Jennifer is a self-described YA librarian, book reviewer, author, quilter and reality TV junkie.  She helps librarians connect with young adults, and helps young adults connect with books they love through her writing, blogging, and presenting. When she's not reading or writing about great young adult books, Jennifer works directly with teens in her position as the Middle School Librarian at the Little Red School House & Elisabeth Irwin High School in Greenwich Village in Manhattan.

In addition to Jennifer's presentation, we will also hear about the new Teen Spaces at Atlantic City and Camden County Libraries.  There will also be time for you to talk and share with each other.

We promise you a day of engagement, sharing, and inspiration!

  1. Come as a Team!  Contact your school/public library counterpart and come as a team.  See the "Connecting" section on our wiki (sjrlcaplus.pbwiki.com/Connecting) to find your counterpart.

  2. Network with Others: Connect with school and public librarians who serve teens across South Jersey!

  3. Share your accomplishments!  If you've collaborated with your school/public library counterpart on programs or services, you'll have an opportunity to share your success stories.

  4. Tell us about your Teen Space!

  5. Help us plan new ideas and services:  What can can we accomplish together in 2009?

  6. Be inspired: By our inspiring speaker, and by each other!

Join SJRLC's Children's & YA Book Eval Program

Hello everyone -

The SJRLC’s Children’s and YA Book Eval Program is now beginning our 2009-2010 year, and we’d like to take this opportunity to invite you to join us!

Since 1987, the South Jersey Regional Library Cooperative has run a very successful Book Evaluation Program, using review copies of new books provided by top children's and young adult publishers.  Every year thousands of these free books are distributed. When you participate, you and your SJRLC member library will benefit in many ways:

  • For every two book you review, you select one to keep.  Review 20 items and your library has 10 free books!
  • Reviews are entered online; it’s quick and easy.
  •  It’s a great chance to share and compare with other library professionals.
  •  You have the opportunity to preview quality new books.
  •  You can choose to attend bi-monthly meetings scheduled in both the western and southern portions of the SJRLC region, or to receive and return your material via CDL/Velocity Express.

Reviewers are asked to fill out a program sign-up form each year, even if they have completed one in the past. If you’ve already registered for 2009-10, thank you. And if you haven’t, please consider joining us. A sign-up form is available online at http://www.sjrlc.org/bookeval/bookeval2009_2010.pdf. If you know of anyone who would like to join the program, please encourage them to send in a registration as well.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We look forward to working with you!

Summer Reading Program Support

Posted on behalf of James Keebler, Piscataway Public Library

Hello all,

Amidst the funding drama here in Piscataway, apparently I did at least one thing correctly.  We developed a relationship with Sky Blue FC, the new New Jersey professional women's soccer team that will be playing the rest of their games in Piscataway at Rutgers.  We have worked with them to develop a Summer Reading program.  I had previously sent out the information to LMXAC libraries, unsure of how it would be received. Apparently it gained a lot of interest, so I thought I would include the information for libraries around New Jersey if you choose to place it on your listserv.

We pursued the relationship and the program for a few reasons:

  1. Like many communities, we have a very strong youth soccer group.
  2. The tickets are great for all kids, including young girls.
  3. Many of my staff felt it was time for us to support women's professional sports.
  4. As a league that is just starting out, they are extremely friendly and helpful.
  5. Some of the restaurants and businesses that had supported our Summer Reading Program in the past have well...passed.

I have attached the informational flyer if you would like to send out the information to your member libraries.  They are also offering a fundraising option that might be of interest to Friends groups.   If you have any further questions, feel free to contact me or the Sky Blue Staff member listed on the flyer.

Thank you for your time.

James

Cell Phones in the Classroom

Michael Chiumento, Burlington Twp. High School English teacher and Nina Franco, Burlington Twp. High School LMS

It is no secret that kids, especially teens, spend a large portion of their day communicating via their cell phones.  It is also common knowledge that many teachers and administrators view cell phones in a school environment as distractions, instruments for cheating, and other various disciplinary problems.  This session will examine and demonstrate cell phones as learning tools for students both in and out of school. You will see examples of how teachers with the aid of the Internet can reach and engage kids throughout grade levels and across curriculums.

Announcement of RFP

SJRLC A+ Teen Space

Demonstration Project

The South Jersey Regional Library Cooperative invites proposals from SJRLC member public libraries to serve as the demonstration library for the SJRLC A+ Teen Space Demonstration Project.

Borrowing ideas from the very successful ImaginOn facility at the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County (NC), the South Jersey Regional Library Cooperative will match Transformation Grant funds from the New Jersey State Library and a selected SJRLC member library to replicate aspects of these services in Southern NJ and to serve as a model for other New Jersey Libraries.

Our goal is to provide a safe and fun environment for teens that responds to their likes and needs as digital natives in the 21st century through an incubator teen space project.

You are invited to review our RFP and to submit a proposal no later than November 14, 2008. PDF and Microsoft Word versions of the RFP and Application are available at www.sjrlc.org/teenspace

with readers. A three-year lapse from the original publication date is allowed in order to determine popularity.

The awards are given in three categories, with the option of one additional series category: a work specifically designated as Easy-To-Read by the publisher; a work of fiction for grades 2 - 5; a work of non-fiction for grades 2 - 5. Awards, presented annually at the NJLA spring conference, are given to both the author and the illustrator.

This year's conference will be held at the Ocean Place Conference Center in Long Branch, from April 29-May 1 with the awards presentation luncheon on May 1.
