The Garden State Children's Book Awards were established in 1977 in order to give recognition to books for elementary grade readers. The nominees are selected
by a committee of the Children's Services Section of the New Jersey Library Association on the basis of literary merit; the winners are chosen by popularity
with readers. A three-year lapse from the original publication date is allowed in order to determine popularity.

The awards are given in three categories, with the option of one additional series category: a work specifically designated as Easy-To-Read by the publisher; a work of fiction for grades 2 - 5; a work of non-fiction for grades 2 - 5. Awards, presented annually at the NJLA spring conference, are given to both the author and the illustrator.

This year's conference will be held at the Ocean Place Conference Center in Long Branch, from April 29-May 1 with the awards presentation luncheon on May 1.

Congrats to Tom Ayars, Cumberland County Library

Ribbon Congratulations to Tom Ayars, Cumberland County Library, who was recently received the 2007 Documents Association of New Jersey (DANJ) Award for Outstanding Achievement in a Government Documents Paper/Project  for his paper “The Road to the Iraq War: An Annotated Bibliography.”

The object of the paper was to document as closely as possible, using only official governmental sources, the step by step progression of events leading to the outbreak of the Iraq War on March 19, 2003. The prize, awarded at the May 2007 Rutgers SCILS Commencement, was $300. The paper will be included on the DANJ web page (http://www.danj.org).

DANJ created the annual award in 2001 to be given to the student who creates the “best” paper/project in the Government Documents class each fall at the Rutgers School of Communications, Information, and Library Science (SCILS). Some of the factors considered in the selection are intellectual content, organization, and usefulness to the profession.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to all those who earned NJLA Awards at the April conference in Long Branch!

Linda Devlin, LJ Mover and Shaker

You probably haven’t received it in the mail, so watch for your March 15 issue of Library Journal with the Movers and Shakers issue because our own Linda Devlin, recently named Director of the Camden County Library System, has been named one of 50 national “Movers and Shakers” by Library Journal.  Linda is recognized for her vision and zest for creative problem-solving:

Ljmoversshakers2007 Confronted with the possibility that the library might have to close for maintenance, Devlin's solution for keeping up service was to open Shelf Life, a small, retail-style branch inside a mall. Peter Bromberg of South Jersey Regional Library Cooperative says, “Linda laid out her vision to her colleagues and recruited them to start the major work involved in opening a small branch library.” It opened six weeks later, attracting mall customers who had never used the library. Though Shelf Life has since closed because the mall is being demolished, Devlin says it proved that retail partnerships can work; she looks forward to similar collaborations in the future.

Linda is among  three graduates of the NJ Academy of Library Leadership chosen as national  movers and shakers this year including Linda, Nicole Cooke from Montclair State University and Janie Hermann from Princeton Public Library; also honored from NJ was Trevor Dawes from Princeton, University Libraries.

You can read all about Linda’s choice online at http://www.libraryjournal.com/article/CA6423398.html

Congratulations, Linda.
