ALA/WHCLIST NLLD AWARD

ANNOUNCEMENT: ALA/WHCLIST NLLD AWARD

The ALA Washington Office in conjunction with the White House Conference on Library and Information Services Taskforce (WHCLIST) is pleased to announce that a monetary award has been created to help pay for a  participant to attend National Library Legislative Day (NLLD) held annually in Washington DC. WHCLIST was an effective force in library advocacy nationally, statewide, and locally, following the
White House Conferences of 1979 and 1991.

  Criteria:

  • The recipient should be a library supporter (trustee, Friend, general supporter), not a  professional librarian.
  • Priority will be given to those who are first-time attendees to National Library Legislative Day.
  • Recipient should include a letter of reference from a library director, school librarian, trustee board Chair, Friends Group Chair, or other library person.
  • Recipient must be willing to continue to advocate for library services.

The Washington Office will contact the recipient's Senators and Member of Congress to announce
the award. Two WHCLIST leaders and one member of the Washington Office staff will choose the recipient each year.

ALA and WHCLIST are committed to ensuring that the American people get the best library services possible. These funds will be used to further those efforts.

If you or someone you know might be interested, please send a letter explaining why you should be chosen, your letter of reference, and a completed NLLD registration form to:

Congrats to the Pennsville Public Library

Congrats to the Pennsville Library on their 70th anniversary-- and more!

Adapted from their press release:

BirthdayOn October 10, 2007 the Pennsville library celebrated:

  • the 70th anniversary of the Library opening on the 2nd floor of old Town Hall in 1937
  • a 50th anniversary of the library being dedicated by the Rotary Club at Broadway & Union Streets in 1957
  • Marie Mabel Scott’s generous donation to the library upon her death which enabled us to purchase our new digital sign
  • the memorial to Gladys Viele by her son Orrin J. Viele which purchased our new patron cards, and...
  • the start-up of a state of the art circulation system allowing Pennsville Public Library to become part of an integrated library system with Cumberland County Library.

By banding together to form a consortium, Salem County Libraries have the opportunity to allow users to view resources belonging to all participating Salem County Libraries. On-line catalog access from remote sites will now be possible for library card holders.

The project was made possible by the Cumberland County Library allowing Salem County Libraries access to their main server at a yearly connection fee provided by the Salem County Board of Chosen Freeholders. Initial connection and equipment costs were supplied by the Pennsville Township Committee and Friends of the Library as well as generous patron donations.

These accomplishments would not be possible without the leadership of a highly functional Board of Trustees working as a team. Our Board understands their role and they do what is necessary to ensure that library services meet the needs of our community.

News from Camden County College on their 40th Anniversary.  Congrats Joan!

Hello --

Camden County College begins its 40th annversary celebrations this spring. Celebrations will continue through 2009, when we celebrate 40 years of graduates!

We've already marked the anniversary of the hiring of the first president, Dr. Otto Mauke. In the fall, we mark the anniversary of the first classes.

We're also looking to the future. We've just officially opened the conference center at our Camden City Campus (a future site for SJRLC events?), and a new building on the Blackwood Campus is slated to open later this year.

The college's website, www.camdencc.edu, features a brightly colored button where visitors will find chronologies, and photographs of the property that is now the college in its former days as an exotic animal farm, then as the Mother of the Savior Seminary, as well as from the last 40 years.

There is also a place for friends of the college to share their memories of it. Almost everyone I meet in South Jersey who learns that I work at Camden County College has a story to tell - and I'm sure the members of this listserv are no exception!

Visit the site - or a campus - soon, and share in our celebration.

Joan
