Open Source Survey

Posted on behalf of Nicole Engard
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi all,

I am working on some very very broad research on open source use in libraries for a book I'm working on.  The focus of the book will be on software you can use that is open source.  If you have a chance to answer this brief survey to help me out that would be greatly appreciated:

Thanks a bunch!!!  (and feel free to share with others)

Thanks

Swedesboro Branch to expand

3657977208_14edccea46

Congrats to Gloucester County Library!

After years of hoping and dreaming, the Swedesboro Council at its May meeting thrilled the customers and staff of the Swedesboro Library Branch of the Gloucester County Library System by approving a bond to fund an addition to the branch. Behind this effort was years of persistent advocacy by the previous Association Board members, customers and staff for the need of additional space.

The Gloucester County Library Commission and Bob Wetherall, the GCLS director, worked with the council on this effort. The plans call for an additional 3,000 square feet to be added to the existing 2,500 square foot building, and include adding a meeting room, a larger children’s area, a staff lounge, a quiet study room, bathroom, more comfortable surroundings for library users and space for more public-access computers.

Designing with Open Source Software: Gimp and Inkscape

Designing with Open Source Software:
Gimp and Inkscape

Date: Thursday, July 16, 2009, 9:00-4:00 PM
Location: Camden County Library Computer Lab, Voorhees
COST: $40
Presenter: John LeMasney

Want to create professional quality design without shelling out $$ for Photoshop? Then this workshop is for you!

In this day-long workshop, we'll go in depth to discover how to use two fantastic Open Source Design Applications: the GNU Image Manipulation Program (AKA GIMP), and Inkscape.

The GIMP provides layers, effects, painting tools, and all of the
features that you have come to expect from a fully featured imaging application like Adobe Photoshop. Inkscape is a vector-based illustration and layout application, similar to Adobe Illustrator in its ability to manipulate text, shapes, paths, vector points, and colors.

Because these programs are Open Source Software, you benefit from the work of thousands of volunteer and professional developers, without having to pay anything for the use of the software.

In this workshop, you will learn to use these tools by doing a poster project step-by-step. By the end of this workshop you will be able to effectively use painting and drawing tools, brushes, layers, path manipulation, photo manipulation, effects, rulers and grids to meet against your most challenging design needs.
